London: The UK has initiated its first government-backed four-day workweek trial, starting on Monday. This trial allows more than 1,000 employees to work reduced days without facing any pay cuts.
According to Anadolu Agency, seventeen businesses, including the British Society for Immunology and Crate Brewery, are participating in this trial by implementing shorter work schedules. Some of these companies are opting for a nine-day fortnight model. An additional four companies are anticipated to join the pilot program soon.
The trial will span six months, and its results are scheduled to be presented to the Labour government next summer. Since the campaign’s initial launch in 2022, nearly 200 UK companies have already permanently adopted a similar schedule.
Labour leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, have shown support for the concept, though the party has not yet officially endorsed the policy. Joe Ryle, director of the 4 Day Week Campaign, highlighted the importance of the trial, noting t
hat the four-day workweek is becoming a reality for numerous businesses and workers across the UK.
The findings from this campaign are expected to play a significant role in the Labour government’s ongoing review of work practices, potentially influencing future policy decisions.
