Türkiye’s natural gas imports increased by 6.6% in March 2022 compared to the same month of 2021, according to data from Türkiye’s energy watchdog on Thursday.
Natural gas imports amounted to around 6.21 billion cubic meters (bcm) from approximately 5.82 bcm for the same month of 2021, Türkiye’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) said in its monthly natural gas market report.
EMRA’s data showed that the country imported 4.24 bcm of natural gas via pipelines in March, while 1.97 bcm was purchased as LNG, marking a decrease of 5.8% in pipeline imports and an increase of 49.2% in LNG imports.
Russia supplied the most gas to Türkiye with 2.75 bcm, while the US and Azerbaijan followed with 897 million cubic meters (mcm) and 761 mcm, respectively.
Gas imports from Russia and the US increased by 6.6% and 125% respectively in March, but imports from the Azerbaijan dropped by around 29% compared to the same period last year.
The country’s total gas consumption also increased by 1.7% to approximately 6.64 bcm compared to the same month last year.
Household consumption grew by 13.8% to 3.21 bcm, and the gas usage in power plants decreased by 37.7% to 838 mcm during the same period.
The natural gas volume in storage during March 2022 decreased by 48.6% to around 929 mcm compared to about 1.80 bcm in March 2021.
