TURKISH VESSEL BUMPS INTO GREEK VESSEL IN AEGEAN SEA

A Turkish vessel bumped into a Greek Coast Guard vessel early Tuesday in the Aegean Sea, near the islet of Imia, China's Xinhua news agency reported quoting AMNA, the Greek national news agency.

No injuries were reported on the Greek side, but the vessel was damaged and was transferred to nearby Leros island for repair.

The Turkish vessel sailed away towards the Turkish coast after the incident.

A similar incident occurred on Jan 17 when a Turkish vessel bumped into a Greek naval cannon vessel in the area, AMNA said.

Known as Imia islet by Greece and Kardak islet by Turkey, the small island is a contested territory between the two neighbouring countries.

It was at the centre of a dispute which brought the two countries to the brink of war in 1996.
