Turkish security forces kill 39 PKK terrorists in week

Turkish security forces killed 39 PKK terrorists in the week between Dec. 8 and Dec. 14, according to a Turkish General Staff statement late Friday.

The statement said one Turkish soldier was martyred and another was wounded in the same period.

A total of 8,892 people who were trying to cross Turkey's borders unlawfully were also detained, it added.

The statement said during the operations, 27 improvised explosives were defused, 63 weapon emplacements, shelters, caves or depots were destroyed, and weapons and ammunition was seized.

More than 100 kilograms of narcotics, 100,000 packets of smuggled cigarettes and 3,000 liters of smuggled fuel, which are used as a source of income by the PKK were also seized, the statement added.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey as well as the U.S. and the EU. In its over three-decade-long terror campaign against Turkey, more than 40,000 people have been killed.

Since the group resumed its armed campaign in July 2015, more than 1,200 people, including security force personnel and civilians, have lost their lives.
