Lisbon: Trkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to participate in the 10th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in Portugal, as announced by the country’s Foreign Ministry on Monday. Fidan will be attending the forum scheduled from November 25 to 27, according to a statement released on the platform X.
According to Anadolu Agency, the UNAOC was established in 2005, initiated by a proposal from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan alongside then-Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. It was subsequently adopted as a United Nations initiative by the UN secretary-general. The Alliance was founded in response to the growing suspicion, fear, and polarization between Muslim countries and Western societies, recognizing the need for a broad coalition to prevent further deterioration of international stability.
The UNAOC’s mission is to counteract such trends by fostering mutual respect among diverse cultures. Under the framework of the United Nations, the UNAOC F
riends Group has expanded to include 158 members, comprising countries and international organizations. The Global Forums represent the highest level of political activities within UNAOC, with the previous forum held in Fes, northeastern Morocco, on November 22-23, 2022.
