Turkish and US-led coalition forces launched an operation on the northern Syrian town of Jarablus on Wednesday in an effort to clear it of Daesh forces, local media reported.
Turkish forces were using intense artillery fire against Daesh forces in the town, Turkish officials told the state-run Anadolu news agency.
The operation, which began at around 4 am local time (0100 GMT), is aimed at clearing the Turkish border of militant extremist groups, enhancing border security and supporting the territorial integrity of Syria, the officials said.
The move comes after multiple cross-border attacks - by Turkey, Islamic State forces and others - were reported on Tuesday.
It also comes on the day of a planned visit to Ankara by US Vice President Joe Biden.
Biden will be the most senior official from Washington to visit Turkey since the failed coup of July 15
