Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur on Saturday became the first Arab winner of a WTA 1000 title after her victory at the Madrid Open.
The 27-year-old Jabeur won the greatest title of her career by defeating American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 0-6, and 6-2 in the women’s singles final.
“When I had the match point, I was like I had to win it from the beginning, otherwise it’s going to be very tough for me. But I’m very happy and trying to realize that I won today, really,” No. 8 seed Jabeur said after her win, her second career title.
Jabeur’s 12 clay-court match-victories led the tournament.
