NEW ORLEANS: Trkiye expressed its deep sorrow following a devastating attack in New Orleans that resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people. The incident took place in Louisiana’s bustling French Quarter during New Year celebrations, leaving 30 others injured.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing hope for a swift determination of the motive behind the attack. The statement extended condolences to the victims’ families and friends and wished a speedy recovery for those injured. It also emphasized the importance of revealing the attack’s motive promptly and holding those responsible accountable.
The attack occurred early in the morning at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Street, when a man drove his truck into a crowd of revelers. The injured were promptly transported to five nearby hospitals. The French Quarter, known for its vibrant atmosphere and as a hub for holiday celebrations, was the scene of chaos and tragedy.
Local officials reported that the suspect, who also fired shots from his vehicle after crashing, was dead. Two officers were among those injured in the gunfire but are currently in stable condition. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell labeled the incident as a “terrorist attack” during a news conference. An FBI official accompanying her confirmed the discovery of an improvised explosive device and stated that agents are investigating its viability.
