Toronto Raptors’ Scottie Barnes named NBA Rookie of Year

Toronto Raptors guard-forward Scottie Barnes won the 2021-22 Kia Rookie of the Year award on Saturday, according to the NBA.

The NBA said on its website that Barnes, won the award after he “received 378 points (48 first-place votes) from a global panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters.”

Barnes beat Cleveland Cavaliers forward-center Evan Mobley and Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham in the voting.

Mobley was second with 363 points, with 43 first-place votes and Cunningham was third with 153 points, garnering nine first-place votes.

Barnes became the third Raptor to win the award, joining Damon Stoudamire who won it in 1996 and Vince Carter in 1999.

The Raptors, the only Canadian-based NBA franchise, selected Barnes with the fourth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft last summer.

Barnes has averaged 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 35.4 minutes in 74 games for the Raptors.
