South Korean Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol Released from Custody After Court Order

Seoul: South Korean impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol was released from custody on Saturday after prosecutors ordered his release following a court order. On Friday, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of Yoon’s request to overturn his arrest, granting his release.

According to Anadolu Agency, after being released, Yoon expressed gratitude for the court’s courage and determination in “correcting illegality,” as reported by Yonhap news agency. Last month, Yoon filed a request with the Seoul Central District Court, arguing that his indictment over the brief martial law declaration was illegal.

Yoon’s release comes 52 days after he was detained and brought to the center on January 15 in connection with his short-lived martial law decree on December 3. He was initially detained on January 15 and formally arrested on January 19 as part of a widening investigation into the failed martial law decree, which he defended. Yoon was indicted on January 26.

The former president is under criminal investigation for abuse of power and leading an insurrection.
