The statements of the Vice President of the European Commission on the migration policy of Cyprus reflect the correctness of the approach and the effectiveness of the policy implemented by the Government in the last 12 months, Interior Minister, Konstantinos Ioannou, said on Tuesday in his written statement, commenting on the Commissioner Margaritis Schinas’ interview with “Politis” daily newspaper.
Ioannou said that Schinas’ statements regarding the management of immigration by the Cypriot Government, ‘constitute recognition of our policy as an example to be followed’, noting that Schinas’ statements were ‘of particular weight and importance’ and reflect the correctness of the approach and the effectiveness of the policy implemented in the last 12 months by the Christodoulides Government.
Referring to Schinas’ statements, such as that a small country such as Cyprus emerges as a European champion of returns with very significant successes, the Minister said that these ‘honour our country and reward our effo
rt’.
He stressed, however, that ‘we are not complacent’, noting that immigration was here to stay and that it is a complex problem, influenced by external factors that can change at any time.
Ioannou stated the Government’s commitment for the continuation and strengthening of successful actions to improve data as regards immigration, ‘having the European Union as our constant supporter’.
He added that he expects the EU’s assistance to be ‘just as decisive’ on the issue of the reevaluation of the status of Syria, an issue for which the Republic of Cyprus has developed an initiative since last summer, he noted.
