RIYADH: Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan convened with Syria’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani on Thursday in Riyadh. The meeting focused on collaborative efforts to shape a stable and secure future for Syria, following significant political upheaval in the region.
According to Anadolu Agency, this meeting marked Al-Shaibani’s first international engagement since the regime of Bashar al-Assad was dismantled last month, highlighting a pivotal moment in Syria-Saudi relations. The talks signified a new chapter in diplomatic interactions, with Prince Faisal emphasizing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to supporting Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
The discussions were centered on evaluating the current situation in Syria and exploring strategic efforts to address ongoing challenges. Both foreign ministers expressed a shared interest in fostering initiatives that would contribute to Syria’s prosperity and integration back into the Arab and Islamic communities. The dialogue also highlighted the importance of preserving Syria’s institutions and resources.
Al-Shaibani’s visit to Riyadh, at the invitation of Prince Faisal, followed the collapse of the Assad regime, with Bashar al-Assad fleeing to Russia after losing control of Damascus to opposition forces. The swift takeover by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham fighters, which resulted in the end of the Baath Party’s long-standing rule, underscored the urgency of international diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.
