Russian Fighter Jets Enter South Korea’s Air Defense Zone

Seoul: Several Russian fighter jets entered South Korea’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the East Sea, as reported by Seoul’s military.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Russian jets crossed into the area at approximately 9:20 a.m. local time (GMT0020), based on a notice from the joint chiefs of staff cited by the Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency.

The Russian jets exited to the eastern and northern parts of the zone after their brief entry. Importantly, they did not breach South Korea’s airspace. Seoul’s military was aware of the planes before they entered the zone and promptly dispatched their own jets in response. The entry was explained as a mistake during military training exercises.

An ADIZ is an international airspace area beyond a nation’s borders where aircraft identification is necessary for security purposes.
