Russia’s Foreign Ministry summoned on Thursday Latvia’s ambassador to Moscow to register its “decisive protest” against Latvia’s state policy on dismantling Soviet memorials.
The ministry said in a statement that it sees the move as a part of Riga’s policy on glorifying Nazi ideology.
“During the conversation, (Ambassador) Maris Riekstins was also informed about illegal steps by the Latvian authorities aimed at creating obstacles in the work of the House of Moscow cultural center in Riga and the Amber Coast sanatorium in Jurmala with the aim of possible expropriation of this Russian property.
“It was stressed that all responsibility for these and other hostile actions lies entirely with the Latvian side. We reserve the right to take retaliatory steps, including asymmetric ones, which will necessarily be sensitive for Riga,” the statement added.
