Paris: At least 735 homeless people died in France in 2023, the organization Collectif Les Morts de la Rue (CMDR) announced in a report Wednesday, according to French media outlets. The report highlights the ongoing challenges faced by homeless individuals in the country.
According to Anadolu Agency, the number of deaths increases to 826 when considering those who were previously homeless but had secured housing before their passing. CMDR expressed concern over what it termed a ‘sad record’, noting that 624 homeless people died in 2022 and 719 in 2021. The organization emphasized the decreasing average age of death among the homeless, which was 48.8 years in 2023, compared to 50 in 2019.
The report pointed out that the majority of those dying on the streets are men, comprising 88% of the deaths. However, the rate of deaths among women has seen an increase over the past year. CMDR warned that the documented figures might only represent a fraction of the actual deaths, suggesting that the true number could be
six times higher. The organization criticized both society and authorities for their indifference towards the plight of homeless individuals.
