The prolongation of the Cyprus problem makes the resolution of the property issue more difficult to the extent that it may become insoluble, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties that participated on Wednesday in the bicommunal dialogue under the auspices of the Embassy of the Slovak Republic said in a Joint Communiqué.
Any developments on the ground that may affect the solution of the Cyprus problem should be discouraged, they said.
The Joint Communiqué said that during the meeting at Ledra Palace Hotel, leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties participating in the bicommunal dialogue under the auspices of the Embassy of the Slovak Republic, expressed opinions on the topic proposed by the hosting United Cyprus Party (BKP): “What will be the correct approach to solve the property issue?’
‘The property issue holds a significant place in the resolution of the Cyprus problem’, they said, noting that the prolongation of the Cyprus problem makes the resolu
tion of the property issue more difficult to the extent that it may become insoluble. ‘Any developments on the ground that may affect the solution of the Cyprus problem should be discouraged’, they added.
‘According to the principles of the international law, the European Court of Human Rights decisions and the achieved convergences in the negotiations, the solution to the property issue should be based on compensation, exchange and restitution methods’, the Communiqué said.
‘The property issue should be resolved in a manner that is in line with basic human rights and does not violate the property rights of Cypriot refugees’ they said.
While resolving the Cyprus issue under UN auspices, they add, ‘it should not be forgotten that the issue is political, and the solution to the property issue should be shaped in accordance with the recommendations of the European Court of Human Rights and respectful of the fundamental human rights of Cypriots.’
The next meeting of the leaders and representatives of the poli
tical parties will be held on September 25, with Cyprus Green Party (CGP) as the hosting party, it said.
