President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides welcomes “with satisfaction the decision of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to appoint María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, as his personal envoy for the Cyprus issue”, a press release by the Presidency says.
The press release issued on Friday says that the President of the Republic has from the outset of his administration, after assuming his duties, set the goal of reactivating the international community and especially the UN, to look into the prospects of resuming talks from where they left off in 2017 in Crans Montana, Switzerland.
“President Christodoulides remains determined to continue working with a clear political will, both for the resumption of talks on the agreed basis and for concluding the talks by reaching a solution to the Cyprus issue, on the basis of the UN resolutions, and the principles and values of the EU”, the press release says.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occu
pied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
