The developments in the region and the electrical interconnection were among the issues discussed at the trilateral meeting between Cyprus, Greece, and France, held on Tuesday evening in New York. The meeting was attended by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis. In statements after the meeting, President Christodoulides said that he would also respond to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's speech during the former's address at the UN General Assembly. "As expected, the unsettling developments in the region are the main topic dominating all discussions here in New York, and within this context, during our joint meeting with the French President and the Greek Prime Minister, taking into account France's particular interest in the developments in the region, we discussed and exchanged views on how this situation, which poses serious risks, can be addressed," said President Christodoulides. He noted tha t within this context, they agreed that during the upcoming Meeting of the nine Mediterranean EU member states (MED9) in Paphos, the regional developments would be the main topic. The President also welcomed the presence of the King of Jordan at the MED9 meeting, emphasizing Jordan's pivotal role as a pillar of stability in the region. He said that another topic of discussion during the trilateral meeting was the electrical interconnection between Cyprus and Greece, taking into account the strong French interest in participating in the implementation of this strategically significant project. Referring to his address at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, the President said he would specifically address "the developments in the region, the role that the Republic of Cyprus plays, a role recognized by the UN Secretary-General and many foreign leaders." He also said that he intends to respond to Turkish President Erdogan's speech before the UN General Assembly, regarding both regional issues and the Cyprus p roblem, as well as the prospects for resuming negotiations. During his address, Erdogan repeated his calls for recognition of the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island's northern third. According to his schedule, the President of the Republic will address the UN General Assembly Plenary at 11:00 a.m. (New York time) and will subsequently speak before the Security Council on the promotion of peace and respect for the UN Charter. He is also expected to participate in a lunch with a delegation from the leadership of the Hellenic American Council and have a meeting with the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani.
