President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has said that the International Peace Summit that is taking place today in Cairo on the situation in the Middle East is a crucial one, expressing hope that there could be a positive outcome. Speaking Friday to reporters, the President, who was invited by the Egyptian President to attend today’s Summit, said that the invitation was important, as it constitutes a recognition of Cyprus’ role in the region, but also of the excellent relations it maintains with all the states of the region. The invitation, he continued, “is a recognition of our role in the region, of the excellent relations we maintain with all the states in the region, and we hope that our presence, together with other states, of course, will be able to lead to a positive result”. A positive outcome, he said, could be to prevent the situation from further deterioration especially for the civilians. Any negative developments, he warned, will make the situation even more difficult. The President said that he spoke with the Egyptian President noting that the goal is to see how to create the foundations so that “an already difficult situation does not get worse.” President Christodoulides, who will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, also said that he will have bilateral contacts with other leaders who will attend. Expressing hope for a positive outcome, the President said ‘our region needs positive news, considering all that is happening,” stressing again that “the situation is very difficult.”
