President of Salerno province arrested

Finance police on Thursday arrested Franco Alfieri, the current mayor of Capaccio Paestum and president of the province of Salerno, in the southern Campania region, a member of the centre-left opposition Democratic Party (PD).

Five others were also involved on charges of illegitimately influencing public tenders, corruption and abuse of public office.

Alfieri was jailed as part of the probe while five others were placed under house arrest: Vittorio De Rosa and Alfonso D’Auria, respectively the legal representative and special manager of the company Dervit Spa; Elvira Alfieri, sister of Franco Alfieri and legal representative of the business Alfieri Impianti S.r.l.; Andrea Campanile, an employee of the municipality of Capaccio and a member of the mayor’s staff; and Carmine Greco, a head technician who worked for the municipality of Capaccio.

In addition, finance police seized over 543,000 euros in assets.

The probe concerned a number of procedures to assign public contracts, in particular two contracts to
renovate the public lighting system in Capaccio Paestum, among others.

Both tenders for the job were won by Dervit Spa with suspects allegedly cooperating so the company would win the bid, according to investigators.
