Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides will have later on Wednesday a telephone conversation with the UNSG, Antonio Guterres, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned. According to information, Guterres and Christodoulides will speak over the phone at the latter's request. The President of Cyprus is currently paying a working visit to Vienna, where he will have talks with the Austrian Federal Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, with whom he will discuss, among others, his proposal for a more active involvement of the EU in efforts to break the deadlock in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. Diplomatic sources said on Tuesday that Nicosia will inform the UN at the highest level about the results of Christodoulides' visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday, and more generally about the contacts taking place with a view to promote his proposal about the Cyprus problem aiming at the resumption of the negotiating process, under the UN auspices. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
