The Cyprus issue, bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region were discussed during a telephone call on Wednesday between the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer.
According to a post by the Cyprus Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, on the “X” platform, during the telephone conversation, the two leaders discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and the efforts made by President Christodoulides to resume substantive negotiations, aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions and EU principles and values. They also discussed bilateral relations, as well as the latest developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region, the post reads.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in J
uly 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed last January María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
