?eavy rain that started pouring on Tuesday, before the kick-off of the football match between APOEL and Karmiotissa, at GSP Stadium, in Nicosia, led to the postponement of the match, with the Stadium’s General Manager, Phivos Constantinides, telling CNA that this is only the second time in the stadium’s history that a match was postponed due to the unsuitability of the playing field caused by downpour.
Asked about the last time a match could not be held due to rain, Constantinides said that few years ago a game between APOEL and Apollon was also postponed due to heavy rain, stressing that out of the 1800 games that have been played at GSP, only 2 were postponed due to rain.
As he explained, there is high permeability at the field in GSP Stadium, that is, the water that falls on the turf, is drained due to the construction of the playing field very quickly. He added that under the grass there is quartz sand and therefore it does not hold any water.
