The project for the installation of photovoltaic (PV) systems in 405 school buildings was completed in the summer of 2023, following an agreement between the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth and the Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC). The total cost of the project amounted to pound 6.6 million.
A joint announcement by the Ministry and the EAC said that the final project progress report, which includes the installation of PV systems with a total power of 4.9 MW, thermal insulation of approximately 84,000 square metres and waterproofing of the surfaces where the PV systems were installed, was delivered on Monday to Minister of Education, Sport and Youth, Athena Michaelidou, by EAC President, Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou.
This was an agreement that is part of EAC’s social and corporate responsibility and which, except from achieving a 30% reduction in total energy consumption in schools, also contributes to the implementation of one of the central pillars and goals of the EAC, that of energy saving, it
said.
It is noted that the project has been approved for funding by the EU, within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Facility. The funds for its implementation were provided by the EAC, and will be gradually repaid by the Education Ministry, it said, while total cost of the project amounted to pound 6.6 million, significantly reduced from the original budget of pound 9.6 million.
Theodosiou said that everyone’s goal was for Cyprus to enter the path of energy awareness. ‘Energy is a commodity of vital importance’, she said, adding that contributing to saving energy was a social responsibility.
