Cyprus’ Artistic Gymnastics champion, Marios Georgiou on Monday achieved one of the greatest successes in the history of Cyprus at the Olympic Games, finishing sixth at the horizontal bar final.
The 26-year-old gymnast did an excellent programme at the horizontal bar final at the Bercy Arena, but a fall cost him a medal. He finished 6th, with a score of 13.333, and became the 4th Cypriot athlete of all time to finish 6th at the Olympics.
It is worth noting that the final was marked by the fall of several athletes.
The Cyprus Sports Organization (CSO) congratulated Georgiou and his coach Panagiotis Petrides, as well as the Cyprus Gymnastics Federation.
The CSO refers in a statement to ‘an historic performance by our champion in Artistic Gymnastics, who took 6th place with 13,333 points’. It adds that Georgiou ‘executed his programme excellently’, but that the fall at the exit cost him.
It also said that in his third consecutive participation in the Olympic Games, Georgiou outdid his performance in 2021 in
Tokyo, when he ranked 9th in the horizontal bar, ‘recording another massive success in his career’.
