Paphos to host MED9 Summit on October 11

The priorities and objectives of the Cyprus Presidency of MED9 Summit of heads of states and governments were presented Thursday by Cyprus Ministers. The Summit is taking place on October 11, at the coastal town of Paphos.

Foreign Affairs Minister Constantinos Kombos presided over a press conference in Nicosia along with Ministers of Education, Sports and Youth Dr. Athena Michaelidou, Energy, Trade and Industry Yiorgos Papanastasiou, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Dr. Maria Panayiotou, the Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou and the Deputy Minister of European Affairs Marilena Raouna.

MED9 group consists of Cyprus, Greece, France, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Spain and Portugal. The competent Ministers of MED9 will meet before the Summit of the leaders.

The previous days Cyprus hosted the Agriculture Ministers of MED9 who adopted a joint statement on ways to tackle water scarcity in the region.

Kombos referred to the importance of the Cyprus Presidency noti
ng that Nicosia will have the chance to take initiatives by giving impetus to issues that are of key importance for Cyprus.

Therefore, he said, we will get the change to strengthen the active role that Cyprus wishes to play within the EU.

Kombos said that we will address issues such as sustainable development and green transition, issues related to drought, water scarcity, green energy, renewable energy sources and culture.

Each of the Ministers had the chance to analyze the priorities that fall under their competence.

They said that the Summit will give the chance for discussion and coordination among the Mediterranean EU states regarding their priorities.

They also noted that the Summit is a great opportunity for Ministers to draw common policies as regards challenging issues in the region.

The Culture Ministers will discuss issues during an online session and will sign a Declaration on Cultural Rights.
