Cyprus MP Irene Charalambides, Vice Chair of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, head of the Cypriot delegation, met on Thursday with her Greek counterpart in the Assembly Demetris Markopoulos, with whom she discussed about the situation in Gaza and Ukraine.
The meeting took place in Athens, on the sidelines of the Women Political Leaders (WPL) Summit.
A statement from the Parliament says that Markopoulos praised the cordial cooperation that the two delegations have been developing over time, within the framework of the OSCE as well as Charalambides’ positive role, as a member of the Bureau of the Assembly.
The Cypriot MP thanked him for Greece’s undivided support and Markopoulos’ efforts, as a member of the Bureau. They also agreed on a number of actions on which the delegations will take initiatives.
The two MPs exchanged views on the latest developments in Ukraine and the role of the OSCE PA as regards the consequences in security and stability in Europe.
They also noted that all member states need to adher
e to the principles on which the OSCE is based as reflected in the Helsinki Final Act, pointing out that states, such as Turkey, with their ambivalent stance have managed to obtain significant financial and political benefits, at the expense of other European states such as Greece and Cyprus, which bear significant costs by fully implementing the adopted sanctions.
Eastern Mediterranean, Gaza crisis, migration and the Cyprus issue were also on the agenda. Charalambides referred to the huge influxes of migrants Cyprus is receiving.
