US Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie Fischer, emphasized the need for a sustainable electrical interconnection of Cyprus during remarks the made at the 4th Thessaloniki Metropolitan Summit on Friday.
The US Ambassador stressed that “this is the time to think about the geopolitics around such a project and to recognize how important it is to see Cyprus connected to Europe through this opportunity”, noting that Nicosia is an important partner of the US in promoting stability and security in the region.
“The time has now come to stop thinking only about money and EU engagement on the Great Sea Interconnector. Cyprus has fought for great energy projects and we have seen a number of Presidents trying to implement them. Now is the time to get it right because these opportunities will pass and Cyprus will be left behind,” Fisher noted.
At the same time, she noted that the project can attract workers from the artificial intelligence and technology sector who need a reliable electrical connection. “I repeat , now is the
time and if this opportunity passes it will be very difficult to come back afterwards and Cyprus will be left burning fuel oil at a time when there is a need for green transition,” she added
Finally, Fisher referred to the important role Cyprus plays in enabling the UN, the US and the EU to send aid to Gaza and remove civilians from the conflict area.
