Nicosia Mayor attends event of mayors of EU capitals in Brussels

Nicosia Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis held a series of meetings in Brussels on the sidelines of his participation in the 13th meeting of the Mayors of the EU capitals, that was organised by the Municipality of Brussels this week.

A press release by the Nicosia Municipality says that the meeting was attended by European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, and the main discussion was on the “Rule of Law”.

Accompanied by Municipal Secretary Myria Pilakouta, they also attended a meeting organized by the Brussels Region together with the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (Belgium) on “A European policy fit for the future”.

The Mayor of Nicosia signed the Brussels Declaration by which Mayors of European cities, presidents of metropolitan areas and representatives of cities across Europe call on the EU to adopt an ambitious and effective European urban policy.

In their Declaration, they ask for more involvement of local authorities in the decision-making centers of the EU institutions, finan
cing and programs of the cohesion policy to have a long-term horizon, the distribution of European resources by the central governments of the member states to take seriously the views of local authorities and bridging the gap between urban, rural and peri-urban areas.

During their stay, they met with Mario Nava, Director General of the European Commission DG Reform, with whom they discussed about the bi-communal project of the Pedieos river and infrastructure issues of the Nicosia Sewerage Council.

They also met with Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission, with whom they discussed about research and innovation issues and the role of the CYENS Centre of Excellence in Nicosia.

Finally, they held a meeting with Cypriot European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides.
