Ankara: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated Friday that US President Donald Trump will eventually engage in trade negotiations, highlighting that American consumers will face the consequences of the ongoing trade war initiated by Washington. “In the end, Americans are going to lose from American trade action,” Carney remarked during a meeting with Canada’s provincial leaders at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.
According to Anadolu Agency, Carney expressed confidence in future discussions with the United States, emphasizing the need for respect in the negotiations. “That’s one of the reasons I am confident that there will be that discussion with the appropriate amount of respect and the breadth. I am ready for it anytime they are ready,” he said. Carney, who assumed leadership last week, has not yet directly communicated with Trump, who has frequently criticized Canada, suggesting it should consider becoming “the 51st state.”
When questioned about Trump’s comments, Carney dismissed them, asserting t
hat trade talks would only occur “until we get the respect we deserve as a sovereign nation. By the way, this is not a high bar.” The US has imposed significant tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, and there are threats of broader tariffs on all Canadian exports starting April 2.
In response, Carney and the provincial leaders have decided to expedite plans to establish a national trade and energy corridor to enhance domestic supply chains and reduce reliance on US markets. To address the potential economic impact, Ottawa will eliminate the one-week waiting period for employment insurance for workers affected by the tariffs and provide temporary tax deferrals to businesses facing liquidity challenges.
Carney, who took over the leadership of the Liberal Party following Justin Trudeau’s resignation, is expected to initiate the process for an early parliamentary election this weekend, with a vote anticipated on April 28. The trade war initiated by Trump has bolstered Canadian nationalism, improving the Liber
als’ standing in the polls as they were previously headed toward electoral defeat.
