National Council meeting in progress

?he meeting of the National Council began shortly after 10 am and the political leaders are being informed by President Nikos Christodoulides about the latest developments in the Cyprus issue.

They will also exchange views ahead of the President’s trip to New York City for the UN General Assembly and his meeting with Secretary General Antonio Guterres, set for the 23rd of September.

As regards a possible tripartite meeting, diplomatic sources say that it should not be expected before October.

A possible final date for the tripartite will be decided after the separate meetings UNSG will hold with President Christodoulides and T/c leader Ersin Tatar, on the sidelines of the UNGA.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.

Guterres appointed last January María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar
as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
