Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment, Maria Panagiotou departs on Sunday for Brussels to attend the EU Council of Agriculture and Fisheries (AGRIFISH) on Monday.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry, the Council will exchange views on ways of ensuring prompt and structural responses to the current crisis that the agricultural sector is facing.
The Ministers will exchange views on short-term measures that could be taken by member-states to reduce administrative costs for farmers in the context of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and other EU legislation, as well as medium-term and long-term actions to simplify the CAP legislation. Furthermore, they will also explore other actions which could be taken on the basis of the Farmer’s demands, in the context of the EU fiscal framework and without jeopardizing the aims of the Green Deal.
Europe has been rocked by massive protests by farmers citing increased burden due to the Green Deal, the impact of EU trade agreements
with Latin American countries, as well as agricultural imports from war-battered Ukraine.
The Council will also discuss biosecurity and vaccination, as essential tools in prevention, control and eradication of animal diseases and the unilateral management measures for fisheries introduced by the United Kingdom.
