Mideast Named as Extremely Hazardous Zone for Journalists by UN Rights Chief.

GENEVA: The Middle East has been declared ‘one of the most dangerous places ever for journalists,’ as stated by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The statement was released in observance of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, emphasizing the critical role journalists play as the ‘eyes and ears of a world on fire, and the voice of victims in crisis.’

According to Anadolu Agency, Volker Turk highlighted the increasing attacks on journalists, noting that they face threats such as being killed, harassed, intimidated, imprisoned, or silenced in regions ranging from Gaza and Ukraine to Sudan and Myanmar. In 2023 alone, 71 journalists and media workers were killed, and over 300 were imprisoned. Turk pointed out that women journalists are particularly vulnerable to online harassment, which can lead to physical violence.

The ongoing conflicts, especially in the Middle East, have significantly contributed to the peril faced by journalists, resulting in a high number of casua
lties among media workers. Turk expressed grave concern over the safety of Palestinian journalists, stating that they require much better protection.

Turk further stressed that impunity for attacks against journalists ‘undermines justice,’ with more than ‘eight out of every ten killings of journalists going unpunished.’ He urged governments to enhance their efforts to prevent attacks, protect journalists, and prosecute those responsible.
