Director for Media at the European Parliament, Jesús Carmona, said on Friday that the role of the media is decisive for the upcoming European elections that will take place next year.
Carmona, who was accompanied by the Head of the European Parliament Office in Cyprus, Andreas Kettis and Spokesperson of the Office, Thea Pieridou, discussed with Cypriot journalists in Nicosia about the 2024 European elections, underlining that the goal is the massive participation of European citizens.
He explained the role of the European Parliament, saying that MEPs are the elected representatives of the citizens of the European Union and represent the interests of citizens.
Carmona told journalists that the media should contribute to informing the public about the work of the European Parliament, noting that many legislations that are being adopted have a direct impact on citizens' lives. He referred, among other things, to the legislations concerning the green transition, digital transformation, the Erasmus program and equal pay between men and women.
He also referred to the challenges that the European Union is faced with, especially after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and spoke about the sanctions that were imposed.
In addition, he talked about the European Union's relations with China and the US, noting that the member states of the European Union are doing things together that they could not achieve alone.
