Manila combats oil spill after massive tanker capsizes off Philippines

ISTANBUL: A massive oil tanker capsized off the Philippines on Thursday, with authorities mobilizing assets to combat oil spillover.

According to the Philippines Coast Guard, the Philippine-flagged motor tanker Terra Nova vessel was carrying 1.4 metric tons or 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil when it capsized off Bataan province, on the island of Luzon.

The vessel was sailing southern Iloilo Port on Panay Island.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. asked officials to determine the environmental impact of the oil spillover.

16 of the 17 crew on board were rescued, said the Coast Guard, adding that the search for the missing crew is going on.

It said aerial assets were monitoring the oil spillover.

‘Marine environmental protection personnel have also been mobilized to combat the oil spill,’ said the Coast Guard.
