Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has voiced strong criticism against Europe, accusing it of ‘hypocrisy’ in the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza. Mahathir expressed his views on social media, highlighting his disillusionment with Europe, which he once saw as champions of human rights.
According to Anadolu Agency, Mahathir condemned the European stance, noting that the continent’s support for Israel’s military actions in Gaza contradicts its human rights values. He pointed out the severe destruction in Gaza due to Israeli bombings and the tragic loss of nearly 43,400 Palestinian lives since the start of the conflict on October 7. Mahathir described the devastation in Gaza, where cities, towns, and even refugee camps have been targeted, leaving many Palestinians without refuge.
Mahathir further criticized Western media for not adequately covering the events in Gaza, suggesting that this lack of coverage contributes to a distorted perception of the conflict among European and Am
erican audiences. He praised Al-Jazeera for its comprehensive reporting on the situation, emphasizing that the channel’s coverage is not widely viewed in Europe and America, leading to a lack of awareness about the realities faced by Palestinians.
The conflict in Gaza has escalated since the Israeli army imposed a siege in the northern region, aiming to prevent Hamas from regrouping. Meanwhile, Palestinians accuse Israel of attempting to occupy the area and displace its residents. The ongoing siege has resulted in over 1,800 deaths and severe shortages of food and essential supplies, according to Palestinian health authorities.
