Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that Malaysia has prepared a draft resolution for the United Nations General Assembly, proposing the expulsion of Israel from the organization in the event of violations concerning Palestine. Anwar disclosed to lawmakers that the draft is currently in the negotiation phase and is anticipated to be presented at the UNGA for approval “soon.”
According to Anadolu Agency, Anwar emphasized the need for “strong measures” against Israel, citing human rights violations and genocidal acts. He asserted that Malaysia is committed to ensuring that the issue receives global attention to halt the Israeli regime’s atrocities and facilitate the delivery of critical aid to Palestinians amidst escalating violence. His remarks echo the recent call by Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Palestinian territories, who urged for Israel’s UN membership suspension due to persistent international law violations and occupation of Palestinian
lands.
Once ratified, the resolution is expected to provide a legal foundation for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to continue offering essential services such as education, healthcare, and humanitarian assistance. This comes in the wake of a new Israeli law barring UNRWA operations, impacting its efforts in the Gaza Strip, the occupied West Bank, and East Jerusalem. The legislation is set to come into effect in 90 days.
