Lithuania Does Not Take Sides on Greenland Issue: Foreign Minister

Vilnius: The Lithuanian foreign minister stated on Wednesday that Lithuania maintains a neutral stance on the Greenland issue, as reported by media outlets. ‘Lithuania is not taking either side. Lithuania says that we are all allies, bound by both long-standing cooperation and firm commitments to each other, and it is in that spirit that we resolve all issues that arise between us,’ Kestutis Budry told reporters, according to the public broadcaster LRT.

According to Anadolu Agency, Remigijus Motuzas, the chair of parliament’s foreign affairs committee, added that Lithuania will adhere to a common European Union position regarding Greenland. He highlighted the complexity and sensitivity of the situation due to Lithuania’s close alliances with both Denmark and the United States. Motuzas emphasized the importance of considering the opinion of Greenland’s population in any decision-making process.

Tensions over Greenland have escalated, particularly drawing the interest of US President Donald Trump because of the territory’s strategic location and vast mineral resources. The Financial Times reported a tense 45-minute phone call last week between Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Trump, which left officials in Copenhagen deeply concerned. Trump initially proposed acquiring Greenland during his first term, an idea that Denmark rejected outright. However, his return to the White House has rekindled fears of a more aggressive approach to securing control over the island.
