Istanbul: Turkish company Karmod has initiated the production of a newly designed buoy, specifically crafted for use in shellfish farming, as announced by the company in a statement on Friday. The buoy is engineered to endure underwater pressure and withstand the corrosive effects of seawater, catering particularly to farms raising mussels in offshore or enclosed sea areas.
According to Anadolu Agency, Soner Kement, production manager of Karmod’s Plastics Group, stated that the specially designed mussel buoys are intended to enhance the productivity of shellfish farms. The buoys are constructed using high-density hexene polyethylene, a material selected for its superior durability against both underwater pressure and seawater. Karmod employs fully automated rotational molding technology, applying continuous thermal processing to bolster the buoy’s resistance to the highest level.
Each buoy undergoes a one-bar air pressure leak test to ensure water tightness, as noted by Kement, with only products that pass
these stringent checks being approved for shipment. Ergonomic usability was a significant factor in the buoy’s design, explained Kement. The mussel buoys are produced with dimensions of 80×120 cm to meet farm demands, and rope attachment handles are specifically crafted to ensure a tight grip, maintaining the buoys’ stability in marine conditions. While the standard pressure level is one bar, Karmod can increase this to two or three bars for custom requests. Up to 110 buoys can be loaded onto a single truck, facilitating transport.
