Minister of Justice and Public Order Anna Koukkides-Prokopiou had a meeting with the Ambassador of Kazakhstan Satybaldy Burshakov, with whom she discussed, among other things, the bilateral agreements between the two countries. According to a press release by the Ministry, the Minister of Justice said that both the Agreement on the Extradition of Fugitives and the Agreement on Mutual Legal Cooperation have been ratified by the Cypriot Parliament and the ratification by Kazakhstan is pending. The Ambassador said there was a slight delay due to the recent elections in his country but ratification is expected very soon. During their discussion they talked about the bilateral Agreement on the Transfer of Convicts, the text of which has almost been finalised. The Ambassador of Kazakhstan extended an invitation to the Minister of Justice to visit Kazakhstan when the two countries are ready to sign the agreement. He also referred to the recent political reforms in his country and spoke about the important role that Kazakhstan plays in the strategically important region of Central Asia. He noted that bilateral trade with the European Union and with Cyprus is constantly increasing, especially due to the sanctions against Russia. The Minister of Justice confirmed the long-standing close cooperation of the Republic of Cyprus with Kazakhstan, adding that, as far as the field of Justice is concerned, the Ministry is always open for cooperation in the areas of its competence.
