Italy-France meeting on migration to be held in Menton

French Prime Minister Michel Barnier on Friday will travel to Menton in France and then Ventimiglia, both close to the Italian-French border, to discuss the fight against illegal immigration with Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, the French government said on Wednesday.

French cabinet sources also said Barnier will be accompanied by French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, the architect of planned new hardline immigration policies.

A “working meeting” is scheduled between the four members of the Italian and French cabinets.

Earlier this month, the two governments had agreed to create, at the beginning of 2025, a joint unit of cooperation to exchange information of migrant smuggling networks based on cooperation that has been ongoing between France and Great Britain since 2020.
