Rome: The right-wing coalition government led by Giorgia Meloni in Italy has approved a new security bill that increases penalties for those who attack law enforcement and enhances legal protections for security forces.
According to Anadolu Agency, the new Security Decree was confirmed during a Council of Ministers meeting chaired by Meloni. The decree aims to provide more tools and protections for the police, expedite the eviction of illegally occupied properties, and enforce stricter measures against criminals. Meloni emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a safer Italy through these legislative actions.
During a Cabinet meeting, a decree was passed that amends the bill, which had been under parliamentary debate for about 1.5 years. Key measures include heightened penalties for attacks on law enforcement, enhanced legal rights for security forces, and faster eviction processes for unlawfully occupied properties. The decree also targets fraud against the elderly, increases penalties for pickpocketing, and introduces lifelong bans from public services for those who use violence against workers in transportation sectors. Additionally, it imposes up to two years in prison for activists who block roads, a method often employed by climate activists.
Francesco Boccia from the main opposition Democratic Party criticized the bill as “punitive populism.” To be enacted, the bill must receive approval from both the lower and upper chambers of parliament.
While the Cabinet was in session, protests erupted near the Pantheon in Rome. Demonstrators attempted to march to the prime minister’s office but were met with barricades set up by security forces. Clashes ensued as protesters tried to push through, leading police to intervene with batons. Reports indicate that two police officers were injured by bottles thrown during the scuffle. Protests continued to occur at various locations throughout the city.
