Ankara: Ireland’s Ambassador to Trkiye, Clare Brosnan, has openly criticized US President Donald Trump’s plan to forcibly relocate Gazans, stating that Palestinians should not be made to leave their country. In an interview with Anadolu, Brosnan expressed her views on various topics, including Turkish-Irish relations, Trkiye’s EU membership process, and the situation in Palestine.
According to Anadolu Agency, Brosnan emphasized the cultural similarities between St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland and the Muslim month of Ramadan, highlighting how both events foster community and gratitude. She shared her personal experience of attending iftar meals in Trkiye, describing it as particularly meaningful.
Brosnan discussed the robust relationship between Trkiye and Ireland, noting frequent exchanges of tourists and residents between the two nations. She underscored the importance of multilateralism and the commitment of both countries to maintaining a rule-based international order. The recent meeting between the foreign ministers of Trkiye and Ireland at a G20 event further exemplifies their dedication to multilateral cooperation.
Regarding Trkiye’s EU membership, Brosnan confirmed Ireland’s support for EU enlargement and stated that Dublin is in favor of assisting all candidate countries meeting the necessary criteria. She stressed that Ireland is keen on enhancing cooperation with Trkiye, pointing to recent positive developments between the EU and Trkiye.
Addressing US-Europe relations, Brosnan emphasized the need for continued collaboration despite existing disagreements. She underscored the importance of maintaining cooperative ties with the US, reflecting on a recent St. Patrick’s Day event in Washington attended by Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin and President Trump.
On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Brosnan viewed the US’ 30-day ceasefire proposal as an opportunity for peace. She praised Trkiye’s previous mediation efforts and called for international support to end the violence, urging Russia to agree to a ceasefire.
Brosnan firmly opposed Trump’s proposal to forcibly displace Gazans, advocating for a two-state solution and supporting peaceful resolutions for Palestinians. She reiterated Ireland’s commitment to sharing its views internationally to back Palestine’s future and emphasized that Palestinians should remain in their homes.
Regarding Syria, Brosnan expressed optimism that the new government would lead to a peaceful and stable resolution, supported by the EU and international community. She mentioned the ongoing EU discussions on lifting sanctions in a step-by-step manner, ensuring they could be reversed if necessary.
