Iran Ambassador stresses his country’s principled stance on Cyprus issue

The Ambassador of Iran to Cyprus reaffirmed his country’s principled position and support to the efforts to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem, during a meeting held on Wednesday with President of the House Representatives Annita Demetriou.

According to press release by the Parliament, Demetriou received the new Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Cyprus Alireza Salarian on the occasion of the assumption of his duties.

During the meeting, Demetriou expressed concern about the situation in the Middle East, stressing the importance of dialogue and cooperation to achieve conditions of peace and stability in the wider region and prevent a possible further escalation.

The press release says that both stressed the added value of parliamentary diplomacy to achieve this goal.

‘We condemn every form of terrorism wherever it comes from and we remain committed to dialogue and diplomacy for the peaceful resolution of disputes’ Demetriou underlined.

Referring to the developments regarding the efforts to
solve the Cyprus problem, in view of the arrival to Cyprus of the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General, the President of the Parliament underlined the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side to the goal of resuming the talks from the point where they were interrupted in Crans Montana, to achieve a bizonal, bicommunal federation solution in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions.

She stressed that the claim of the Turkish side for a “two-state” solution, cannot be accepted, as it would legitimize the faits accomplis of the Turkish invasion and occupation. The President of the Parliament also condemned the intensifying Turkish provocations in the closed area of Famagusta and inside the buffer zone.

The House President noted that it is also to the benefit of Turkey to work together to achieve a solution to the Cyprus problem, in accordance with international law and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations and underlined that such a development will create important prospects for the benefit of a
ll Cypriots, but also for the wider area.

The Ambassador of Iran reaffirmed his country’s principled position and support to the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

Salarian noted the friendly relations between the two countries since ancient times and expressed the will to further strengthen them, making special reference to their parliamentary dimension at the bilateral and multilateral level.
