Last week, between Monday and Friday, an international level training session in the field of port and maritime security was held at the CYCLOPS – Cyprus Center for Land, Open-seas and Port Security, in Larnaca, with the participation of the Cyprus Police.
The training included simulated search and rescue and crime in a maritime environment, such as arms and drug trafficking, and/or migrant smuggling, police said in a press release.
It added that it also included information on modern practices of approaching victims and other persons, examination of suspected persons and simulation of the adjudication of cases of these forms of organised and cross-border crime.
It is noted that instructors were members of the Port and Maritime Police which contributed to the training, with instructors from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UN Office on Drugs and Crime), from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) of the United Nations and finally, from the Search and Rescue Coordination Centre
(RSRC) of the Ministry of Defence.
The training was attended by prosecutors from Cyprus, Lebanon and Egypt and frontline personnel, such as members of the Police, from the three countries. Judges from Cyprus and Italy also attended the training.
According to the Police, “the organisation of the international training action highlights once again the recognition of the work carried out by the Authorities of the Republic and the importance of international cooperation in addressing the constantly evolving challenges presented both at national and international level, forms of serious and organised cross-border crime.”
