The President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, honoured on Wednesday the members of the Cypriot Olympic Team delegation, who participated in the 33rd Summer Olympic Games, in Paris, presenting them the emblem of the House.
Demetriou welcomed the sailing athletes Pavlos Kontides and Denis Tarantin, track and field athlete Milan Trajkovic, gymnast Marios Georgiou, cyclist Andri Christoforou, swimmer Kalia Antoniou and sailing athletes Natasa Lappa and Marilena Makri and congratulated them for the tireless efforts they make to honor Cyprus at an international level.
Addressing the athletes, she emphasized their valuable contribution to sports and the Olympic ideal, while noting that all members of the delegation have been worthy representatives of Cyprus, making the country proud with their dignified presence and their awards.
At the same time, the President of the Parliament pointed out the support provided by all those who participated in the mission, such as the representatives of the Cy
prus Olympic Committee, the federations involved, the coaches as well as the families of the athletes.
In the context of this meeting, the President of the Parliament asked to hear from the athletes and all the bodies that attended the problems faced by the delegation in Paris, but mainly the concerns of the athletes who compete in the Olympic sports.
As pointed out by the sportsmen and women, these problems are mainly focused on the issue of their professional rehabilitation, on the need for financial and practical support from the state, as well as on the absence of appropriate infrastructure.
Consequently, the President of the Parliament requested that suggestions be submitted from the side of all those present to deal with these problems with the aim of supporting and properly organizing sports in our country.
Demetriou emphasized that she will take the necessary steps by making an effort to solve these problems, through the competent parliamentary committee, so that Cypriot athletes can fully demonst
rate their abilities and talent.
