UNSG’s personal envoy for Cyprus María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar continued on Wednesday her contacts on the island with meetings with the negotiators of the two sides in Cyprus.
Holguin held in the morning a meeting with Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, which lasted a little more than one hour.
According to CNA sources, the meeting falls within the context of being briefed during her first visit to Cyprus. She was also informed about the Technical Committees, but mainly “the discussion focused on the issues of her mission”.
At noon she had a meeting in the Turkish-occupied area of Cyprus with the representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Gunes Onar.
According to the same sources, no new meetings with the two negotiators have been scheduled before her departure from Cyprus.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swis
s resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
