High temperatures persist on Thursday, red alert for forest fires

High temperatures will continue on Thursday, especially over inland areas of the island, with the Department of Meteorology renewing the yellow warning.

The yellow warning is in effect from 12 noon Thursday until 4 p.m., with temperatures expected to rise to around 40 degrees over inland areas.

Meanwhile, the Forestry Department has also issued a red alert for the risk of forest fires for Thursday.

An appeal is made to the public who will choose to spend the Bank Holiday in wooded areas “to be particularly careful, avoiding completely actions and activities that may cause a fire, i.e. avoid lighting a fire, using electrical tools that produce sparks or flames, as well as throwing cigarette butts and lit matches. Lighting fires for the preparation of food is permitted only in barbecues in picnic areas”, the announcement adds.
