High concentrations of dust in the air on Monday

High concentrations of dust are observed in the air on Monday, 12 February, according to measurements from ground Stations of the Air Quality Monitoring Network operated by the Department of Labour Inspection.

A press release from the Department of Labour urges the public, and particularly any vulnerable groups of population (children, the elderly, and the infirm) to avoid circulating in open spaces until the observed episode has elapsed, as the small size of respirable particles in dust may have negative effects on human health.

The employers, based on The Safety and Health at Work must take appropriate measures after assessing any risks that their employees may face while working in open spaces, and it is recommended that workers in such spaces use appropriate means of personal protection, the Department of Labour Inspection says.

In detail, the latest hourly dust concentrations measured at 9:00 am in the following areas are in Nicosia:

103.3 µg/m3, in Limassol 80.2 µg/m3, in Larnaca 89.3 µg/m3, in Para
limni 107.4 µg/m3, in Paphos 35.7 µg/m3, in Zygi 91.3 µg/m3 and in Ayia Marina Xyliatou 39.7 µg/m3.

More information on the measured pollutant concentrations and real-time updates is available online at www.airquality.gov.cy, and also through the free mobile application ‘Air Quality Cyprus’.
