UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, is to hold on Wednesday, separate meetings with his personal envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, and with Greece's Foreign Minister, George Gerapetritis, in New York. Guterres is scheduled to meet Holguin at 16.00 New York time (23.00 Cyprus time). During the meeting, Holguin is expected to brief the UNSG about her contacts regarding the Cyprus issue. During her last visit to Cyprus in May, Holguin said she was at the end of her mission and would prepare a report while she would meet with the UN Secretary General. Right after his meeting with Holguin, Guterres is to meet Gerapetritis, who is in New York to promote Greece's candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term. During the meeting, according to yesterday's statements by Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, the Greek Foreign Minister is expected to convey the need for the start of a discussion between the sides, to investigate whether there are prospects f or resuming the talks for the resolving the Cyprus Problem. President Christodoulides also said that Athens and Nicosia were in coordination and that the next steps would be decided based on the discussions. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. Last January, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
